Chinese medicine treats imbalances within each individual that manifest in a variety of ways. For example, literal or metaphoric “pain in the neck” can derive from the same TCM diagnosis.

Many diseases and conditions are successfully treated by acupuncture every day including (but not limited to) the common cold, sinusitis, tinnitus, ulcers, hemorrhoids, constipation, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, migraines, etc.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the effectiveness of acupuncture as a treatment for over 100 conditions, including the following:

  • Addiction (smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc.)
  • Cancer pain and side effects of treatment
  • Insomnia
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Ear, nose, and throat disorders: toothaches, earaches, sore throat, etc.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders: colitis, gallstones, gastroenteritis, spastic colon, etc.
  • Gynecological disorders: dysmenorrhoea, infertility, polycystic ovary syndrome, urinary tract infections, PMS, etc.
  • Urological Problems: male sexual dysfunction and prostatitis
  • Liver and gall bladder disorders
  • Musculoskeletal disorders: tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, sciatica, low back pain, TMJ, osteoarthritis
  • Neurological disorders: headaches, craniocerebral injury, fibromylagia, post-stroke paralysis, neuralgia, etc.

We here at Herbs and Healing treat all kinds of conditions, but we get many inquiries about the following:

Facial Rejuvenation
Frustrated by the appearance of new wrinkles on your forehead or puffy bags under your eyes? We can help. Facial rejuvenation acupuncture, also known as an acupuncture facial, is a simple, non-surgical way of improving your complexion and diminishing lines and sags. The placement of extremely fine needles increases blood flow and stimulates collagen production (collagen gives skin its elasticity). Other points support your body’s natural energy, proving the idea that beauty is more than skin deep. Herbal masks soothe the skin and enhance the effects of the treatment. You will notice firmer, more radiant skin after just a few sessions, and you may also notice other benefits as the treatment progresses—including better sleep, fewer headaches, better digestion and more energy. Fertility
In Chinese Medicine, any constitutional imbalance can be a potential roadblock to conceiving. Acupuncture and herbs can successfully address these imbalances, improving your overall health and at the same time increasing your chances of becoming a mother or father.

Dozens of studies show that acupuncture can boost pregnancy rates—especially in women undergoing IVF. Some studies show that acupuncture can nearly double your odds of achieving a successful assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedure. Acupuncture can also benefit male factors such as poor sperm count, motility, and morphology.

Sometimes, women who are struggling to conceive have obstructed blood flow which may be due to fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, or hormonal imbalances. We have years of experience treating these and other gynecological conditions with acupuncture and herbs. Chinese medicine, however, also excels in helping patients who have “no known cause” for their infertility. These patients often present with clear patterns in Chinese medicine that don’t have bio-medical equivalents. Addressing these underlying patterns then becomes the key to success.

How does it work? From a biomedical perspective acupuncture increases uterine blood flow, reduces your levels of stress hormone, and normalizes the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis—key to normal reproductive function. Learn more.

Oncology Support
A cancer diagnosis starts a whirlwind. There are consultations, tests, procedures and prognoses. Both the disease and its treatment can be debilitating. Chinese medicine, though, has become a recognized asset in dealing with cancer. Major cancer treatment centers like Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York, MD Anderson in Houston, and the University of San Francisco have begun serious investigation of acupuncture and other branches of Chinese medicine, integrating them within their mainstream programs.

A basic concept for oncology in Chinese medicine is called “fu zhen.” This strategy focuses on supporting the body’s natural strengths and balances, especially while the patient is undergoing conventional western treatment. Acupuncture, herbs, tui-na massage and Qi gong exercises have been shown to reduce or eliminate many of the side effects of a variety of procedures. This includes chemotherapy related nausea, hot flashes, fatigue, “chemo-brain” and neuropathies as well as problems associated with surgery and radiation therapy. Chinese medicine can also effectively address insomnia and anxiety. Western medicine has made great advances in the treatment of cancer, but experts agree that patients who integrate Chinese medicine into their treatment have better outcomes and significantly improved quality of life. Pain Disorder
Acupuncture's analgesic effects are well-documented and have been extensively studied since the late 1970's. (Though the Chinese have used acupuncture to treat chronic pain conditions for thousands of years.) The Herbs and Healing acupuncture staff (Acupuncture Associates, PC) regularly treats injuries, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and TMJ (temporomandibular jaw) disorders.

With acupuncture, patients avoid the unpleasant side effects of pharmaceutical pain medicine. Even better, acupuncture can be just as effective as pharmaceuticals: the World Health Organization has found that acupuncture's effectiveness in treating chronic pain is comparable with that of morphine. Additionally, there is evidence that acupuncture can heal the underlying cause of the pain by increasing microcirculation and mobility.

The National Institute for Health recommends acupuncture for many pain-related conditions and asserts that acupuncture should be considered as an adjunct treatment for other painful conditions, including (but not limited to), "addiction, stroke rehabilitation, headache, menstrual cramps, tennis elbow, fibromyalgia (general muscle pain), low back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and asthma." Though the exact mechanism of action is still unclear, research suggests that stimulating acupuncture points prompts the flow of endorphins, serotonin, and other pain-soothing substances. Stress Reduction

Stress can disrupt your sleep, make you irritable and, ultimately, interfere with your health. In fact, many of the diseases we treat at Acupuncture Associates are exacerbated by if not caused by stress.

When you're under stress, your body produces a hormone called cortisol, which is associated with elevated blood pressure and immune system suppression. Chronic stress (and constant high levels of cortisol) can cause a variety of symptoms and disorders, including anxiety, insomnia, tension headaches, TMJ, digestive problems, and low libido.

Acupuncture, which has been used to alleviate stress for over a thousand years, can restore balance in one's body by regulating areas where the flow of Qi is blocked. It is also endorsed as a treatment for stress relief by both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health.

Research shows that acupuncture releases endorphins and serotonin, feel-good chemicals that help reduce stress. Acupuncture also improves the circulation of blood throughout the body, which oxygenates tissues and flushes out cortisol and toxins. Finally, acupuncture has a calming effect: it decreases your heart rate, relaxes your muscles, and lowers your blood pressure.

One study, published in the journal Anesthesiology, found that auricular acupuncture (ear acupuncture) can reduce anxiety in patients who are on their way to the hospital for an operation. Patients who had acupuncture en route to the hospital reported a 66% decrease in anxiety; those in the control group (patients had sham needles) reported an increase of 10% in stress levels.
